Start With the Foundations

Understanding Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector-borne illness in the United States. Knowing how it spreads and what early signs look like helps you ask better questions and seek care sooner.

Cause & Ticks

Caused mainly by Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, spread through the bite of infected blacklegged (deer) ticks. Risk generally rises the longer a tick stays attached, which is why daily tick checks matter.

Common Symptoms

Early signs may include an expanding red rash (erythema migrans), fever, chills, fatigue, headache, and muscle or joint aches. Not everyone notices a rash, and later symptoms can affect joints, nerves, or the heart.

Testing & Diagnosis

Diagnosis combines symptoms, exposure history, and exam. A classic rash may be diagnosed clinically. Two-step blood tests detect antibodies, but they can be negative in the first weeks of infection.

Recommended Treatment

Current CDC and IDSA guidelines recommend antibiotics such as doxycycline, amoxicillin, or cefuroxime, prescribed by a clinician. Most people treated early recover well. Course length depends on the stage and symptoms.

Seeing the Connections

Infection, Immunity & the Nervous System

Symptoms rarely live in isolation. Here we gently separate what is well established from what is still emerging research.

Persistent symptoms

Persistent Symptoms

Established: Some people experience fatigue, brain fog, body aches, and joint pain lasting 6+ months after treatment, known as post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome (PTLDS). Estimates suggest roughly 5–10% of treated patients.

Emerging: Researchers are studying lingering immune activation, bacterial remnants, and tissue changes. Extended antibiotic courses have not shown consistent benefit in clinical trials.

Nervous system

Lyme & the Nervous System

Established: Neurologic Lyme can cause facial palsy, meningitis, and nerve root pain, numbness, or tingling. These typically respond to appropriate antibiotics.

Emerging: Studies are exploring how inflammation may affect memory, focus, mood, and sleep, and how nervous-system regulation may support daily functioning.

Immune health

Immune Health & Inflammation

Established: When Borrelia enters the body, the immune system sends white blood cells and signaling molecules (cytokines) to fight it. This protective inflammation causes many early flu-like symptoms.

Emerging: In some people the immune response may stay activated after infection clears. Scientists are investigating why, including links to gut health.

Supporting the Foundations

Whole-Body Wellness

Lifestyle habits do not replace medical care, but they can support the body's natural resilience during and after recovery. Small, consistent steps matter.

🥗

Nutrition

Colorful whole foods, fiber, and healthy fats nourish the gut microbiome and help balance inflammation.

🌙

Restorative Sleep

Deep sleep is when the body repairs tissue and the brain clears waste. Consistent rhythms help.

🚶

Gentle Movement

Walking, stretching, and paced activity support circulation and mood. Listen to your energy.

🌿

Stress Support

Slow breathing, time in nature, and connection may calm the nervous system and support the vagus nerve.

🤝

Supportive Care

Partner with qualified healthcare professionals, track symptoms, and reduce everyday toxic exposures.
